Local Attractions

While Mount Gambier is justifiably famous for the Blue Lake there are many other interesting and perhaps less well-known attractions in the area.

There are several sinkholes and caves to visit nearby including the Umpherston Sinkhole and Engelbrecht Cave near to town. The Princess Margaret Rose Caves
and the pink dolomite Tantanoola Caves are both a short drive away.
The Princess Margaret Rose Caves can be visited as part of a boat trip up the
scenic Glenelg River from nearby Nelson. The World Heritage listed Naracoorte
Caves with a variety of guided tours available are approximately one hours drive
from Mount Gambier.

Two lesser-known attractions that are within easy reach of the Barn Motel and Apartments are the spectacular sinkhole known as ‘Hells Hole’,
with a 30-metre drop to the water from the overhanging viewing platform,
and the equally fascinating Mount Schank, an extinct volcano
with a walking track around the rim and to the bottom of the crater.
