The Coonawarra wine district, with its vast array of wineries with cellar door tastings and sales, is just half an hour’s drive from Mount Gambier and well worth a visit.

The nearby Penambol Conservation Park and the Telford Scrub Conservation Park to the north of Mount Gambier have delightful and easy walking tracks. Guidance on the birdlife of these and other areas can be given by your hosts who are both keen and experienced birdwatchers. Both Red-tailed and Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos are generally present at Telford Scrub Conservation Park. Bool Lagoon, listed as a Wetland of International Importance, is approximately a one-hour drive north of Mount Gambier, and definitely worth a visit when seasonal conditions are favourable, for anyone interested in birds.

The picturesque seaside town of Port MacDonnell is just 20 minutes drive from the Barn. Port MacDonnell is known as Australia’s Southern Rock Lobster Capital and fresh lobsters (or crayfish) are usually available in season. Fishing is also a popular pastime in the area, either from the jetty or breakwater or from a charter vessel.
